This book is comprised of very useful information that students should have for most courses they take. This book is a compilation of materials that Franklin used in his Ph.D. program, which makes it a great choice. I would also recommend it for the reason that it is available in hardback.The third choice for the best chemistry textbook would be CCD Chem, Chemistry - A User's Guide. This book has a student-oriented approach to learning chemistry. It also provides thorough explanations for each topic in the book. While this book is good, I would not choose it for two reasons.First, the book is a little long, and some people may find it boring because of its reading style. Second, the chapters are scattered around the book, which is not really an advantage for anyone who wants to keep track of all the information in the book. Therefore, I would recommend Organic Chemistry: A User's Guide by Frederick Nunn.The fourth choice would be The Ultimate Online Chemistry Textbook by Arthur Sampson, which would be a very important part of a chemistry curriculum. It is an interactive website where students can work together with a teacher who also provides extra material at the end of each chapter.So, when it comes to choosing the best o rganic chemistry textbooks, my personal opinion is that if you are looking for a combination of a complete chemistry curriculum and video tutorials, I would recommend Organic Chemistry: A User's Guide by Frederick Nunn. ACT or SAT Which test is right for me As a high school science and math tutor, I get a lot of questions about college prep and standardized testing. Many students struggle between deciding between taking the ACT or the SAT if their desired school accepts both test scores. Over the years I have found a few key differences that help students decide which is right for them.The ACT and SAT tests are a test designed to evaluate a student’s aptitude for a variety of subjects. Each test changed every session, so the scores are scaled to make them comparable from session to session. Although almost every college will accept either score, it is up to the student to decide which test is better for them. Both take roughly 3.5 hours plus breaks, and cover a variety of core subjects. There are, however a few key differences:1. The ACT has a Science section.Although this ‘Science’ section may scare many students away from the ACT, a more accurate title would be ‘Science Reasoning’ section. This section does not test one’s knowledge about physics, chemistry, or biology, but rather tests one’s ability to use the scientific reasoning one has developed in those courses. This section consists of experimental data, charts, graphs, and other information which the student must analyze and use to come to some sort of conclusions.2. The SAT has an unscored ‘experimental’ section.The SAT has an additional, unscored ‘experimental section, which will either be an additional math, reading, or writing section. This means there will be an extra section in one of these categories, but it will not be identified as to which one is not graded, so be sure to try your best on each one.3. The SAT penalizes you for wrong answers.The ACT uses only your correct answers in order to determine your section and overall scores. The SAT however, not only awards points for wrong answers, but subtracts points for incorrect answers. This means that if one is taking the SAT, they are better off leaving an answer blank than ‘guessing’. There are many strategies designed to help a student decide when to skip and when to ‘guess’ on the SAT, but a student should really use their own judgement on how confident they feel about each answer. If they are pretty sure but have some doubt, they might want to guess, but randomly bubbling, or ‘Christmas-treeing’ as it is sometimes called, is highly discouraged.4. The SAT emphasizes vocabulary.The SAT is known for its difficult vocabulary questions, and there are plenty of prep materials out there just to help you learn these. If you are a great wordsmith, this will be a good fit for you, but if you struggle finding synonyms or with particular connotations of words, this might be something you should stay away from.5. The location of the essay portions are different.Does writing an essay tire you out, or warm you up? The SAT starts with the essay portion, with the multiple choice sections all coming after. The ACT, on the other hand, finishes with the essay last. If this is something that could affect how you perform on the rest of the exam, it may be something worth thinking about.6. The SAT is broken up into many small sections.When a student takes the ACT, they take each subject in one long sitting. On the SAT, the subjects are divided into 10 smaller multiple choice sections, with the student switching back and forth between the different subjects. If moving back and forth between the content confuses you, you may want to take the ACT, but if you get tired of a subject after thirty minutes, you may want to take the SAT.7. The ACT is more time-constrained.On the SAT is it important to be conscious of time, but bad time management could break you on the ACT. A student is much more likely to run out of time on a section of the ACT, so it is important to know your limits in regards to time. If you are not the best at paying attention to the clock during exams, you may want to take a timed practice test to see how strapped for time you’ll end up being.8. ACT composite is more important than sections.When colleges are reviewing a student’s scores, they are much more concerned with a student’s composite on the ACT and with the subject scores on the SAT. So if you have relatively strong scores on each section and they don’t differ much, the SAT might be better for you, but if you are weak in grammar but have a killer math talent, than the ACT might be the way to go. 9. ACT questions tend to be more straightforward.The ACT tends to write pretty straightforward questions that might take multiple steps and a little more effort to solve. The SAT however tends to have harder to understand questions, but once a student understands what is being asked of them, it may be easier or simpler to solve.10. The ACT tests more advanced math concepts.SAT and ACT both cover basic logical arithmetic, Algebra I and II, and a good deal of geometry. The ACT, however, also includes some basic trigonometry, which can be difficult for those with a weakness in math. However, the questions tend to be easier to understand, so I would recommend trying out a few problems of each and deciding from there which you may prefer.11. The ACT Writing Test is optional.The ACT essay portion is not included in one’s overall score- it is sort of tacked on to the end. That said, most colleges will require you take this portion as well. The key difference here is if you struggle with writing essays that require you to take a position on a topic and explain it, then you can still do poorly on it without it affecting your overall score. If you are a strong writer, however, you may want to take the SAT so that your essay score helps your grammar score.Determining which exam is right for youThere are many different factors in deciding which test would be a better for you to take. If you are still unsure which you want to take after reading this post, I recommend taking a practice test of each, and seeing how you fair on each one and which you feel more comfortable with. Use the Spaced Repetition Method to Learn Latin Rapidly!There is nothing more boring and pointless than endlessly reviewing page s and pages of Latin theory and conjugation tables. When we read texts in an intensive way, “it goes through one ear and out the other.” Swallowing a colossal mass of Greek and Latin vocabulary during one sitting is frankly impossible and is the recipe for a learning indigestion! Our brain does not work in a photographic mode to maximize its retention of knowledge, it needs to take little bits of information and repeat, ruminate, revise and then repeat again. That’s the reason why it is preferable to take language classes at a balanced rhythm that contain regular, spaced intervals. This will make learning a lot more entertaining.The spaced repetition method was theorized by philosopher Allemand Hermann Ebbinghaus (1850-1909),   who was considered being the father of experimental learning psychology. In fact, to avoid being overloaded, our brain sorts selects and in an exceptional way constantly forgets information that it judges not to be important. Now with this theory, the r epetitions of Latin phrases or quotations, the infinitive or subordinate proposition of a Latin grammar point, will diminish the impact and the time of forgetting and we can, therefore, increase the time between each revision session.That’s the forgetting curve put into practice by H. Solution: On throwing a dice the total number of possibilities are 6 either of the following numbers may show up i.e. {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6}. Therefore total number of possible outcomes on throwing a dice = 6. The number of outcomes favorable of getting the number 3 = 1. VT: How much time should be set aside to adequately prepare for and complete a Law School application? Hamada: The law school application process is quite onerous, requiring preparation in terms of school selection, letters of recommendation, outlining and drafting the personal statement and diversity statement, revising the law school CV, and possibly drafting a compelling addendum. Undertaking all these materials requires a minimum of 2-3 months of preparation - ideally starting in August and completing the process in late October/early November. VT: What is the single most important thing applicants should focus on with this application? Hamada: By far, the personal statement is the lynchpin to an applicants candidacy. It will dictate their profile and can literally make or break their candidacy. I, for example, spent from June to October drafting and re-drafting my personal statement till I knew it was perfect. How now know it was perfect? Because years later reading it still gives me chills in terms of how personal and critical it was in illustrating who I was and who I hoped to be. VT: What are the biggest mistakes one can make on a Law School application? Hamada: One of the most fundamental mistakes is not adequately explaining any extenuating circumstance in an applicants academic record. An addendum is probably the most often overlooked aspect of the application and yet this single document can truly serve to mitigate a poor LSAT, explain a misguided semester, and/or shed light on how a personal affliction had an sizable impact on the applicants life and scholastic results. VT: What do Law School admissions officers look for most in an applicants essays/personal statements? Hamada: Based on insider feedback from various Admissions Committees (adcoms), I have taken note that they are most interested in accepting students who demonstrate (in no particular order): 1) a strong sensitivity and appreciation for diversity, 2) determination and desire to effectuate change at any level in any space, 3) critical and analytical thinking, and 4) an unyielding sense of determination to be zealous advocate for their future clients, whether it be in the courtroom, boardroom, or in the field. VT: Is there anything on a students application that would automatically disqualify them from being considered for the program? Hamada: When you are applying to a given states bar, you are asked to file a moral character application. One of the main purposes of the application is to ensure the applicant does not engage in activities that would undermine their moral fabric. This same ethical standard is also applied in law school where an applicant who demonstrates questionable moral character and turpitude is simply not tolerated. VT: What about the Law School admissions process differs the most from undergraduate admissions? Hamada: The quality of writing in your application must display much more analytical and persuasive scholarship. You are about to embark on a degree that requires excellent writing skills so there is no room for error here, unlike in your college applications. Moreover, you now need to demonstrate why you are choosing this degree, unlike college where you could have entered undeclared. After all, we are talking about a 3-year and $100K+ commitment. VT: What kinds of things (experience, grades, etc.) might a student lack that would lead you to advise them not to apply? Hamada: While the LSAT is critical, I believe that a 4-hour exam should not derail your life-long dream. Having said that, I think a poor GPA reflects badly in terms of a sense of maturity and the ability to handle the rigor of a law degree. While immaturity in your first or second your of college is understandable, a horrific GPA throughout college without sufficient cause is, frankly, inexcusable in the eyes of top programs. Also, if in response to why law school? the candidate states: I have no other option, I want to make money, I want to save humanity, I automatically flag this as a case that needs further thought. VT: Is there anything you might see on a students application that would quickly put them ahead in the running? Hamada: Other than submitting your application early or having an above 170 LSAT, 3.9+ GPA and/or stellar Letter(s) of Recommendation, I would say the number one thing would be creating a logical flow between who you were as a child, what you studied in college, what activities you undertook and why (scholastic, personal, volunteer, professional), and how this shapes what you want to do in the future vis--vis law. That element of continuity provides added credibility in your candidacy in that you will see law school all the way through en route to a successful career. This is because you have demonstrated maturity, responsibility, and the notion that your actions have a common line of logic and clear thinking. VT: What advice do you have regarding LSAT test prep? Hamada: Practice, practice, practice past test questions under actual timed conditions! Also take a big picture approach to see what the administrators are trying to test. If you can find that pattern, the underlining purpose of the question, you will crack the test and never look back. Also keep in mind if you are scoring in the 150s or less on your first diagnostic exam, then I highly advise you take a test prep course. If you are still struggling, then get a tutor to find the issues you are personally facing. Remember, test prep is a one size fits all teaching method, so one-on-one instruction can be very helpful. It is unfortunate that the LSAT can still dictate your prospects of admissions, but there is hope I am a living testament of that belief, as are numerous candidates we have worked with over the years. VT: What do law school admissions officers look for in recommendation letters? Hamada: One word: Specificity. Adcom loves to see a recommender go into great detail about why you are articulate, interpersonal, analytical, and simply brilliant. Like a legal opinion, the more detail and facts offered, the more likely the letter of recommendation is genuine and coming from someone who is willing to go to bat for your candidacy.
